Who is allowed to enter Mount Athos?
Mount Athos follows a historic monastic rule known as the Avaton, which permits entry only to men. This regulation is set and enforced by the Holy Community of Mount Athos and applies to all visitors. Aegean Aputure fully respects and complies with this tradition.
How early should I apply for the Athos permit?
Ideally 4–8 weeks in advance. Last‑minute permits are possible but not guaranteed.
Can I photograph inside the monasteries?
Photography is allowed in many exterior areas. Interior access depends on monastic rules and must be approached with respect. We advise you on what is appropriate.
Mount Athos
Do I need a special permit to enter Mount Athos?

Is Mount Athos physically demanding?
Moderately. Expect uneven terrain, monastery staircases, and long walking paths. Basic fitness is recommended.
What equipment is recommended for Athos?
A fast 24–70mm, a 35mm prime, and a low‑light capable camera. Tripods are optional but useful.
What Clothing Should I Bring for an Autumn Expedition on Mount Athos
For autumn on Mount Athos, wear modest, layered, weather‑resistant clothing: long trousers only, a light fleece, a breathable long‑sleeve shirt, a compact rain‑/wind‑jacket, and sturdy walking shoes. Evenings get cold and humid, so pack extra socks and a thin beanie. Neutral colors are preferred inside monasteries.
Is Mount Athos safe?
Yes. Athos is one of the safest places in Greece. We maintain long‑standing relationships with the monasteries.
