Mount Athos Pilgrimage & Photography Expedition
Why This Journey Is Unique
This is not a typical photography tour.
It is an opportunity to enter the world of Orthodox monastic life on Mount Athos, combining pilgrimage, photography and time spent within active monasteries.
Mount Athos is a self-governed monastic republic with a long and deeply rooted Orthodox tradition. Access is restricted, and the monastic communities follow their own rules and rhythms. The peninsula is accessible only to men, and visitors are expected to respect the customs, services and daily life of the monasteries.
Our expedition is designed around that reality. Photography is an important part of the experience, but it takes place within the rhythm of the pilgrimage rather than being the sole focus of the journey.
With a maximum of four participants, we travel between monasteries, attend services where permitted, photograph architecture, interiors and landscapes, and spend time experiencing the quiet rhythm of monastic life.
The emphasis throughout is on respect, patience and observation.
Athos Expedition
Day 1 – Arrival & Preparation:
Meet at Thessaloniki Airport and transfer privately to Ouranoupoli.
Overnight stay near the port, with dinner and a briefing about the journey ahead.
Day 2 – Entering the Holy Mountain:
Ferry to Mount Athos, weather permitting.
Visit and photograph Pantokratoros Monastery before settling into the monastery accommodation.
In the evening, attend vespers where permitted and have time for quiet reflection.
Day 3- Pantokratoros & Sacred Silence:
A full day at Pantokratoros.
Explore the monastery and its surroundings, attend services where permitted, and photograph the sacred interiors, architecture and surrounding landscapes.
An optional photography mentoring session will be available in the afternoon.
Day 4 -Journey to Xenofontos (East Coast): Travel towards Xenofontos Monastery, including sections of rugged gravel roads, with opportunities to photograph the dramatic architecture and coastal landscapes along the way.
Visit the monasteries of Panteleimon, St. Peter and as part of the day's journey.
Continue to Xenofontos Monastery, participate in evening prayers where permitted, and experience the hospitality and daily rhythm of the monastery.
Overnight at Xenofontos.
Day 5 – Sketes & Closing Reflections:
Visit Dafni and nearby sketes and Simonos Petra Monastery, with opportunities to photograph their intimate chapels, courtyards and surrounding landscapes.
Return by ferry to Ouranoupoli, or to Ierissos if weather or ferry conditions require an alternative route.
The expedition concludes with the return journey from the Mount Athos area.

Important Note
Mount Athos is an active monastic community, not a conventional tourist destination. Access to monasteries, services, interiors and photographic locations is subject to the rules of each monastery and to circumstances during the expedition.
Weather and local conditions may also affect ferry crossings, transportation and the itinerary. We will adapt the journey when necessary while respecting the regulations and rhythm of Mount Athos.
Expedition Highlights
The expedition is limited to 4 participants.
The small group allows the journey to remain personal and flexible while respecting the quiet character of the monasteries and the practical limitations of travelling on Mount Athos.
- Photograph ancient monasteries, chapels, sacred interiors and landscapes throughout the journey, when photography is permitted.
- Walk and pray along paths followed by pilgrims for centuries, where faith and history meet.
- Visit a variety of monastic communities, each with its own architecture, traditions and rhythm.
- Experience the quiet hospitality of active monasteries and observe the daily rhythm of monastic life.
- Share moments of silence and devotion alongside pilgrims from around the world.
- Stay within active monasteries two nights at Pantokratoros and one night at Xenofontos rather than simply visiting them as a day trip destination.
- Travel by local vehicles over rugged gravel roads, with opportunities to continue on foot along pilgrimage routes.
- Receive simple monastery meals during your stays, with opportunities to eat independently in Karyes when appropriate.
- Benefit from personal photography guidance and mentoring from Konstantinos throughout the expedition.
